Happy Fit Tip Friday!

Today’s tip is all about sleep.

Sleep is one of the most underrated activities for our overall health. For example, it can help you in terms of nutrition. If you don’t have enough sleep, you’ll find that you are hungry and cranky since it actually increases the hormone ghrelin which is in charge of your appetite. So if you don’t get enough sleep, it’s going to negatively impact your appetite.

In addition, sleep is also important for your body’s recovery from your workouts. It’s effectively how we recharge our entire mind, body, and spirit. Even if your sleep is impacted slightly, it will ultimately affect everything.

If at all possible, it’s important to get enough quality sleep. One way to help is to improve your sleep hygiene. Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday, even on the weekends. This works with your circadian rhythms to help you sleep more restfully, and enable you to wake up more naturally.

You should also have a good bedtime routine and optimal sleeping environment. Begin to wind down 30-45 minutes before you crawl into bed. Dim the lights, get off the electronics, read, have a cup of tea – anything that signals to your body that it’s time to relax.

Your ideal sleep environment should include a cool, dark room. Ideally, you do not want to keep your phone or other electronics near your bed. Having ambient noise can also be helpful. I swear by my sound machine!

That’s my Fit Tip Friday. Please, please, please… Focus on having a really good bedtime routine to get adequate quality sleep.

Allison
