Hey there, Happy Fit Tip Friday!
Today’s tip is about portion control.
While it’s important to eat healthy, you really need to make sure that your portions are appropriate. Obviously you don’t want to carry around measuring cups or a food scale, so the best way to do that is to use your built-in measuring cups – your hands.
Your inner palms are around 3-4 ounces which is great for lean proteins. Then 1 fist is around a cup and s, 1 cupped hand is probably ½ cup. The tip of your thumb is around a tablespoon which is a great way to measure healthy fats like peanut butter. So take a look at the amount of food that you’re eating and compare it to your hand to assess your portions. Obviously the most accurate way to measure is with a food scale. Another option is to use a food scale for a few weeks to get used to what the portions look like. But use your hands if you’re at a buffet, restaurant, or social event and you’re not sure how much you’re eating. It’s a great way to kind of get your portion control and check.
Here’s a helpful visual from Precision Nutrition (also where I received my coaching certification).
Reply and let me know if you are clear on what portions look like and how you keep track.
