Happy Fit Tip Friday!

According to Mentalhealth.org, in the past year 74% of people have felt so stressed that they’ve been completely overwhelmed or unable to cope. Stress has a huge impact on your health so it’s important to have some coping strategies to de-stress.

Here are my favorite ways to not only manage stress, but also maintain and manage your energy throughout day.

Tips to Manage Stress

  1. Meditation
Sitting in stillness can be difficult, but regularly doing so can actual change your brain. Start doing a 3-5 minutes per day and gradually built up. Using a free app with a guided meditation is the best way to start. I recommend Insight Timer, Calm or Headspace.

  2. Journaling
Not to be confused with keeping a diary, journaling is writing out your thoughts. Ask yourself: why am I stressed right now? Then write out the answers. Getting your stress triggers out on paper has been shown to help manage stress.

  3. Breathwork
Focusing on your breath can quickly help calm you down. Using 4×4 Box Breathing, otherwise known as tactical breathing, is a quick and easy way to start. Simply breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, breathe out for 4 and pause for 4. This can also help with falling asleep.

  4. Exercise
Walking, running, cycling and other exercises that are repetitive can also be very meditative. It can help to either listen to a meditation or exercise in silence to help clear through your thoughts. When I used to be a long-distance runner, I found running in silence to be a great way to clear my mind.

  5. Emotional Freedom Tapping (aka EFT)
EFT may have a quieting effect on the amygdala, the stress center in the brain, which helps people feel calmer and able to think more clearly after tapping. EFT involves light tapping on several areas of the head and upper body. Brad Yates on YouTube has hundreds of videos that walk you through EFT. I highly recommend giving this a try; it’s surprisingly very soothing.
