When it comes to using supplements, it’s important that you are supplementing a healthy diet versus trying to get all of your vitamins and minerals in this way.
Healthy whole foods should be your top priority. If you feel like you are eating a wholesome diet, with lots of lean protein, vegetables, whole grains, fruit and healthy fats, then you can look at a few supplements to round out your nutrition plan.
Which supplements to consider?
Multivitamin
This is a great way to ensure you meet the daily minimum requirement for your vitamins and minerals. I typically use brands that I’m familiar with and work well for me, such as Optimum Nutrition.Vitamin D
Most people don’t get enough vitamin D since being outside in the sun is the simplest way. Supplementing vitamin D is a surefire way to ensure you have enough. This is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus; both are critical for building healthy bones.Collagen
In addition to being a great source of protein that you can easily add to your coffee, pre-workout, oatmeal, yogurt, etc., collagen is great for your hair, skin and nails. I’ve used several brands but really like Naked Nutrition. Built Bars is also getting ready to launch their own line of collagen.Creatine
Creatine frequently gets a bad rap, but we actually make creatine. If building muscle is one of your goals, adding creatine can help. You don’t need to load it and you can easily add it to your protein shake or pre-workout.
